Monday: Cleansing the Temple

MARK 11:15-19

15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”

18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.

REFLECTION

When Jesus enters the temple, what He finds there is not simply disorder. It is misplaced worship, the things of God crowded out by noise, commerce, and self-interest (Mark 11:15–16). His response is swift and revealing. He quotes Isaiah’s vision of a house of prayer open to all nations (Isaiah 56:7), then Jeremiah’s sobering warning that religion without faithfulness becomes hollow (Jeremiah 7:11). Jesus is not just restoring order. He is showing what He cares about and what He will not leave unchanged.

What moves Him here is worth sitting with. The Court of the Gentiles, the one space where outsiders could come and seek God, had been taken over entirely. The people the temple was meant to draw in had been pushed out. Jesus, as Lord of that temple, will not let that stand.

He is still the same Lord today, patient and zealous, gently clearing away whatever crowds out true worship in us and making space for what was always meant to be there.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Jesus, I praise You as the Lord who is perfectly pure, just, and zeal rooted in love for the things of the Father.
  • Jesus, cleanse and reorder my heart so it becomes a true place of prayer and worship.
  • Jesus, use my life in Your hands so that people whose stories are crowded with noise and distraction may encounter You and be drawn into God’s story.

FAMILY CONVERSATION

Jesus cared deeply about God’s house being a place of prayer and worship.

  • What are some things that help us focus on God?
  • What is one way our family can make space for prayer this week?
  • Family Prayer: Jesus, shape our hearts to love You and make our home a place of prayer.
