Maundy Thursday: The Table of Love

LUKE 22:14-20
14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.
17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
REFLECTION
Jesus eagerly desires to share this meal with His disciples before He suffers, and there is weight in that word: eagerly (Luke 22:14-15). He knows what is coming. He goes to the table anyway.
He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and speaks words that reframe everything: “This is my body given for you.” Then the cup, and the promise of a new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:19-20). The Passover meal Israel had kept for generations now finds its true meaning. Jesus is not simply observing the feast. He is fulfilling it. He is the Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), and what He is about to do will accomplish the deliverance the exodus had always been pointing toward.
Before the night is over, He will kneel and wash His disciples’ feet, the Lord and Teacher taking the place of a servant (John 13:3-5). At this table and on His knees, Jesus shows us what God’s love looks like. Humble, deliberate, and all the way to the end.
PRAYER POINTS
- Jesus, I praise You as my Savior who willingly gives Himself up as a sacrifice.
- Jesus, prepare my heart to receive Your sacrifice with humility, gratitude, and deeper surrender.
- Jesus, let my table, my words, and my daily life become small but real signposts that invite those far from You into the story of Your cross.
FAMILY CONVERSATION
At the Last Supper, Jesus showed His love by serving others and giving His life for us.
- What are ways we can serve one another in our family?
- Who is someone we could show kindness or hospitality to this week?
- Family Prayer: Jesus, teach our family to love and serve others the way You love and serve us.our whole hearts.
